If you're buying Hoffman enclosures for a control panel, a network cabinet, a small junction box, or a custom equipment kiosk, this checklist is for you. I've spent the last seven years managing procurement for an industrial electronics company. Our enclosure budget runs about $120,000 a year, and I've built a cost tracking system that covers every order. The steps below are the ones I actually use, not the pretty version.
Let me get one thing out of the way: if you searched 'Hoffman' because you were looking for Dustin Hoffman and Samuel L. Jackson, this is the wrong article. I'm talking about Hoffman industrial enclosures—the steel boxes that protect PLCs, power supplies, connectors, and jacks in communications and factory settings.

Write down where the enclosure will actually live. Indoor or outdoor? Washdown? Salt air? Dust? Temperature range? Then choose the rating. That's the standard I use when matching environment to cabinet.
Example: a blood pressure monitor in a pharmacy waiting room doesn't need a stainless 4X enclosure. The same electronics mounted in a washdown area? Different conversation. The enclosure material and gasket are driven by the environment, not by the device.
Step 2: Measure usable depth, not outside depth
Hoffman's catalog dimensions are overall dimensions. The usable interior is smaller once you account for the door, the mounting plate, and the back wall. Measure your deepest component, add the wire bend radius, add clearance for terminal blocks and cable troughs. If you skip this, you'll find out when the electrician is on site.
I learned this the expensive way. We ordered a 6-inch deep enclosure for a power supply that needed 6.25 inches of usable depth. Step 4: Do the thermal math before you choose venting
Every watt inside the enclosure becomes heat. Add up the PLC, power supplies, modem, and any other device. Divide by the enclosure's surface area and compare it to the natural cooling capacity. If the load is over the number, you need a filter fan, heat exchanger, or air conditioner. If you ignore this, the first hot day will tell you.
In Q3 2024, I caught a specification that was about 30% over the enclosure's thermal capacity simply by doing this before ordering. The vendor quote said 'ventilation: not required.' The math said otherwise. So glad I ran the numbers before placing the PO—almost sent it without checking.
Step 5: Verify the exact Hoffman Group part number and accessories
Hoffman Group part numbers look modular, but one letter changes the product. A suffix that means gasketed is not the same as a suffix that means stainless. A 'W' might mean white. A missing letter means a rework.

And yes, check the legal name on the invoice. If you've ever wondered 'what is inc' on a vendor's legal name, it means the company is incorporated. In procurement, that matters less than warranty terms, but it matters for the PO. Know which entity you're buying from.
Step 7: Build a receiving checklist before the truck arrives
Do not sign the delivery just because the box is heavy. Check the model number against the PO. Open the door. Look at the gasket. Run a hand along the edges for dents. Confirm the mounting plate is in the crate. Take photos.
I send this checklist to the warehouse before the truck arrives. That policy saved us a $1,200 replacement when a cabinet came in with a bent door frame. If we'd signed the delivery and moved it to storage, the claim would have been a fight. Prevention is a lot easier than arguing about damage later.
